Gun safety is an important issue in many states. In Ohio, there are certain laws established to regulate gun ownership.

Gun safety continues to be a controversial issue in many states. Proponents of gun laws often cite the second amendment right to bear arms for defense and security. Although American citizens have a legal right to bear arms for security and hunting, there are certain laws that must be followed. Gun safety laws vary from state to state. In Ohio, there is no state license or permit required to purchase a shotgun, rifle, or handgun. However, the state still has many restrictions and requirements for those interested in owning firearms.

Gun safety education is important in Ohio. In 2006, a bill was passed that gave schools the ability to offer gun safety as an elective course. Under the bill, the gun safety program classes would provide guidance on the rules of gun safety, instructions on how to handle a firearm and give students practice time at a shooting range.

Gun Permits in Ohio

An individual wants to carry a concealed weapon must obtain a permit. The first step to obtaining a permit is to enroll in a gun safety course. Some standard information taught in a gun safety course includes safe weapons storage, firearm fundamentals, the handling and use of guns, ammunition knowledge, shooting position, and how to improve marksmanship.

There are certain people in Ohio that are completely disqualified from carrying a gun. For example, individuals convicted of a violent felony, fugitives, drug dependent persons, alcoholics, and people deemed mentally incompetent do not have a legal right to carry a gun.

Concealed Handguns in Ohio

A concealed handgun license allows a person to carry a gun on their person. The permit is valid for four years after the issue date. There are certain requirements for an individual to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon. For example, the individual must have been a resident of Ohio for at least 30 days. They must also have the ability to provide evidence that they completed firearms safety training.

Even if a person has a concealed handgun permit there are still certain places where carrying a handgun is prohibited. Some places where carrying concealed handguns in Ohio is forbidden includes public schools, airport terminals, places of worship, day care centers, and any building that is leased or owned by a government entity.

Requirements for Gun Ownership in Ohio

According to the National Rifle Association, there are also age requirements for individuals who want to buy a firearm in Ohio. In Ohio, it's illegal to sell a handgun to a person under the age of 21. It is also unlawful to sell any type of firearm to an individual that is under the age of 18.
